Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon formation process is directly related to sea advance and recoil periods (marine transgression and regression, respectively), which alternate over time.
Such alternating movements that occurred for thousands of years have caused the formation of the belt of sand that extends from Arpoador?s Tip to Vidigal's Tip, where Ipanema and Leblon neighborhoods are currently located. This belt of sand started to restrain descending waters from Carioca Mountain Ridge, thus accumulating on the bottom of the hydrographic basin, and consequently forming the Lagoon.
During rain periods, the high accumulation of water broke the belt of sand that separated the Lagoon from the sea, which allowed the contact with the sea from time to time, eventually bringing a seasonal renovation of Lagoon waters.

Population occupation process, taking place in the middle of the 16th century due to the city's expansion - which started from downtown - brought a number of modifications to the Lagoon. In the middle of the 20th century, a portion of its water surface was landfilled, and its connection with the sea permanently defined through the construction of Jardim de Alah's Canal in 1922.
